Reece Baker

USA | "Hello, my name is Reece. I'm biracial and 50 years old. I'm from North Carolina. I'm an outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter and houndsman, and somewhat of a writer.

I grew up in an era when little was known about Sturge-Weber Syndrome. Life was hard as a child with Sturge-Weber.

I was one of the first ones, if not the first, to do a trial for laser treatments in the 1980s. I was around 12 years old. I got one treatment done and opted out of the following treatments. I told my mother I wanted just to be myself, but the aftermath of the treatment was painful as well.

My Sturge-Weber covers my entire body, from head to toe, and I have internal angiomas on my brain and my bladder. I bleed easily, obviously. Also, having had two surgeries on my right eye, I suffer from glaucoma as well.

To add, I fell into addiction and alcoholism due to the trauma I experienced because society let me know very young and very quickly, that I was different. I learned to be a fighter. Long story short, I recovered and became the man I am today to be able to share experience, strength, and hope with others.

I'm a powerful person in my own right. I'm no longer a victim. I'm a survivor and a warrior. Life is good!
